The development of the M49 expressway creates a modern, safe and fast road link between the M3 motorway, the Mátészalka area and the Hungarian–Romanian border.
The 28.2-kilometre-long, new-route, 2×2-lane expressway between the M3 motorway and Ököritófülpös was constructed by Duna Aszfalt Építő Zrt. As part of the construction project, four grade-separated junctions and five roundabouts, 22 engineering structures and rest areas were constructed, and the 3.3-kilometre-long Győrtelek bypass was also completed.
Construction progressed in line with the preliminary schedule; this first section is expected to open to traffic at the end of October, following the traffic opening procedure. This will connect the Mátészalka region directly to the national motorway network.
Work continues towards the Romanian border
Work will not stop with the completion of the first section. Construction of the next phase (Phase II) of the M49 will continue between Ököritófülpös and Csenger, and between the Hungarian–Romanian border.
The aim of the development is that, once the M49 is fully completed, a direct motorway link will be established from the M3 motorway through the Mátészalka and Csenger areas to the Hungarian–Romanian border, and then, connecting to the Romanian road network, towards Satu Mare.
It is of paramount importance to the Duna Group that it continues to contribute to the development of the region’s transport infrastructure through its professional expertise and construction capacity. The project will improve the region’s accessibility, create faster and safer transport links, and, in the long term, serve to strengthen cross-border economic ties.
The first section, 28.2 kilometres long, will be handed over in the second half of October 2026, in line with the preliminary schedule – and we will continue our work to ensure that the M49 reaches the Hungarian–Romanian border.
The technical handover of Phase I has been completed; the new deadline for Phase II is mid-2029 The development of the M49 expressway has reached an important milestone: the technical handover of the 28.2-kilometre section between the M3 motorway and Ököritófülpös was completed last week, whilst we continue to work on the construction project.
