Project Title:

Development of Reintroducing Reclaimed Asphalt from Pavement Structures into Asphalt Mixes at the Mixing Plant of Hódút Freeway Ltd.

Amount of Funding: HUF 799,334,989

Funding Intensity: 45.80%

Presentation of the Project Content:

The uncertainty to be resolved by the project is that the reclaimed asphalt dosing method commonly used in the Central and Eastern European region, the so-called cold feeding method, allows asphalt manufacturers to use only a maximum of approximately 20–30% reclaimed asphalt. Our project is being implemented in the road construction sector of the construction industry. As a result of the project, we will be able to increase the reuse of reclaimed asphalt from pavement structures in pavement layers by 2 to 4 times compared to current practice. The new products created during the project are hot-rolled asphalt concrete type asphalt mixes containing 20–50% reclaimed asphalt, which will be incorporated into pavement layers and, in terms of their technical content, will be equivalent to our asphalt mixes designed for the same function but containing no reclaimed asphalt.

The aim of our development is to reduce the carbon footprint through the reuse of primary raw materials, while ensuring that these materials are utilized in layers with the highest technical standards appropriate to their performance capacity. Its purpose is to promote environmental sustainability; through the project, we will significantly reduce the use of primary raw materials and bitumen. As a result of recycling, transport distances will also be substantially shortened, thereby reducing pollutant emissions from transport vehicles. In connection with the project, the use of stone, gravel, and sand as primary raw materials for asphalt production will decrease. As a result, the number of landscape-altering raw material extraction sites will also be reduced. With this development, we will take the utilization of reclaimed asphalt in asphalt mixes to a new level by using a hot recycling asphalt mixing system that has not yet been applied in Central Europe. The development of the asphalt mixing equipment at the asphalt mixing plant will be carried out in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, where we will be able to supply the surrounding local and state roads with asphalt mixes containing a high proportion of reclaimed asphalt.

Planned Project Completion Date: 31 October 2023
